The Great Gatsby is a well-known American novel. The story is about a man named Gatsby. The writer of this book used a young man named Nick to describe Gatsby’s whole life. When I finished reading this story, I wanted to use one word to describe Gatsby’s whole life, that word must be miserable.
Gatsby once had a girlfriend. Her name was Daisy. They loved each other. Later, Gatsby was sent to fight in World WarⅠ. He never forgot Daisy. When the war finished, he made a rosy dream to get Daisy back. He wanted Daisy to come back to him. He spent so many years trying to realize his dream. He worked hard and became a very rich man. He bought a big house and often invited people to parties in his house at night. He became famous in New York. For many people, having such fame is a dream, but for Gatsby, it was not. Everything he did was to attract Daisy’s attention. Gatsby was noticed by Daisy. She came to his party one evening. They had a very good time together. Gatsby learned that Daisy married another rich man, Tom, but her life was not happy at all. Gatsby believed that he could have Daisy again. It seemed that he would soon make his dream come true. However, this was just an illusion. The love between Gatsby and Daisy had not been real. Gatsby began to realize it. He began to understand that Daisy only wanted money, but he still didn’t want to lose her. He even wanted to protect Daisy after she drove a car and collided with Mrs. Wilson who was Tom’s “girl” (he is having an affair with her). Unfortunately, Daisy left him. Gatsby was finally murdered by Daisy’s husband Tom and Mr. Wilson. His dream was broken.
Someone may think that rich people always live happy lives. So many people dream to become rich. Gatsby’s story shows a rich man’s miserable life. In my opinion, Gatsby lived in his dream all the time. But it is certain that he also lived in a real society. He is a tragic man. What did his fame bring him? Nothing except pain! At the end of the story, apart from Nick, Gatsby’s father and some of the servants, no one went to his funeral. When he was alive many people went to his parties, but when he died few people went to his funeral. That was the society in New York in 1920s~1930s. Nobody knew what others were thinking. Nobody really cared about others. Just like Daisy. She used to be a lovely girl. Who knew that she would be a mammonist. In fact, it’s a part of the society now. Different kinds of people compose the complex society. Now we are students, but only six or seven years from now, we will go to work. Living in society, we must have a clear mind. We have to be realistic. Knowing what we value most is really important for us. If we always depend on our dreams to live, we won’t be able to survive. We need dreams, but we also need to distinguish whether or not our dreams are meaningful.
