Five Children and It

Robert, Anthea, Jane, Cyril and their young brother,five childrenmove to a new house with their parents and their nursemaid, Martha. After their mother goes out for several days, they find a fairy named Psammead in the sand. It can grant one of their dreams one day. But the wish will last only for a day. When the sun goes down, everything will go back to what was. Their first dream is to be beautiful. When they become beautiful they feel strange when they see themselves. After they play for a long time, they feel hungry. However, Martha doesn’t recognize them so she doesn’t let them into the house. She doesn’t recognize them until everything goes back the next morning. Their second dream is to be rich. They have a lot of gold. Some people don’t believe their gold is real. Some people think they are thieves. They are caught by the police. Luckilythe gold disappears when the sun goes down. Their third dream is to have wings. They fly in the sky. People see them and are so afraid that they all run away. The children feel sad and don’t stop flying until they see a church. They are too tired to control themselves not to sleep. When they wake up, they find they are trapped on the roof. Their fourth dream is to make Robert bigger than the baker’s boy. But he becomes too big. He can’t go into the house. He’s showed to make money. At last, Psammead hopes they can make a wish for him/her.

      When we grow up, many dreams come true but many dreams become more and more away from us. Do our dreams include with others? Do we think of others first? If not, do we become more and more greedy? This book lets us think about our dreams. Let’s think about the meaning of life. Growing is not only for oneself.
