Hello China
By Elliott Pate
As a junior (11th grade) at Collegiate School, located in Richmond, Virginia, I have been a part of many new events occurring at our school this year. We have an unusual amount of new teachers this year, and we enjoy meeting new people, especially new teachers. The Collegiate community has also grown with many new students who are just beginning their fun and exciting journey at Collegiate School. We also have a few new coaches, such as a brand new wrestling coach. Aaron Marsh was born in New York City but grew up in Bedford, New Hampshire. He attended St. Paul's School (a boarding school) during high school in Concord, New Hampshire.  Mr. Marsh went to Williams College in western Massachusetts. He says that his favorite quote is one from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “They fail, however, to perceive the sense of affirmation generated by the challenge of embracing struggle and surmounting obstacles.” He will be an outstanding coach this year and he is already an outstanding math teacher. Each new teacher or student is welcomed to Collegiate with open arms, and each is given a place in the Collegiate community.

Our campus is ever-changing, with many new plants and sidewalks and parking lots. The new plants enrich the campus image, while the new traffic patterns make it easier to go to and from school. Our school day begins at 8:00 am and ends promptly at 3:15. We have eight classes a day, including lunch. Every Monday and Wednesday, we have assemblies at which the Collegiate community can gather and act as a unit while we listen to the seniors (12th grade) give senior speeches. Every senior is required to give a three-to-five minute speech on something that interests them. These speeches are usually funny and entertain the whole student body. These speeches build public speaking skills and also give the Upper School an opportunity to get together and act as a unit.  Collegiate is a school about trying new things while also keeping old traditions. We have about 1,400 students currently attending Collegiate School, and each one of us plays an important role in our school community.
